Picturesque locales, sweet love drama, a few heart-wrenching moments, over the top fight sequences, and a massive ending.

That’s it? You could add one or two more general expectations here and there, but this is just the basic template of a teen drama, right?

However, there are a few exceptions to this genre, and the teenage web series 13 Reasons Why is among those.

Welcome to Watch Tank, and today, we are counting down picks to reveal the top ten hidden facts we are sure you didn’t know about the series, 13 Reasons Why.

People acquainted with the story already know that 13 Reasons Why was developed as an American web series for Netflix by Brian Yorkey, based on the 2007 novel of the same name by Jay Asher. The series tells the story of the life of high school student, Clay Jensen, and the turbulence that follows after high school student Hannah Baker’s suicide. She left behind a box of cassette tapes, which contained the details of why she chose to end her life.

Produced by July Moon Productions, the first episode was aired on Netflix on March 31, 2017. The show starred Dylan Minnette as Clay Jensen, while Katherine Langford played Hannah Baker.

13 Reasons Why gained much fame due to its intense subject matter and gory storyline. When the show itself is so intense and unique, how about its behind the scene stories? Let’s get our eyes glued and read on to find out more.

Number 10: The show has a celebrity producer

13 Reasons Why has a celebrity executive producer, and we all love this lady. Can you guess who? Well, she is none other than Selena Gomez.

Initially, she was approached to play the character of Hannah. But she backed out, keeping in mind the huge cult-following of the book. She wanted the audience to see themselves in Hannah. Any celebrity face would not be able to do justice to that. Instead, she wanted a fresh face for the role to connect better with the audience.

Well, we can only say that the idea was a good one. We couldn’t have imagined anybody else as Hannah but Katherine Langford. What can you say?!

Number 9: Dylan Minnette should be credited for the show’s soundtrack

We loved the show’s soundtrack, but the makers gave credit to someone else for picking the soundtrack. Guess who?

It is the main male protagonist of the show, Clay Jensen, who was portrayed by Dylan Minnette. The makers had an open chat with Dylan, and he suggested the posters placed on the walls of Clay’s room, which were some of the posters of his favourite band. He also wanted tracks of other artists to be placed on the list, but he also felt that Clay’s character won’t prefer them.

To give an authentic feel to the room, they displayed posters of Arcade Fire, Bon Iver, The Cure, The Shins, and various others.

Are you a lover of these musicians? Try to listen to them someday!

Number 8: Therapy dogs for the actors

As discussed, 13 Reasons Why deals with all sorts of intricate and dark issues, which include depression, suicides, rape, sexual assault, and various other similar things.

It was obvious that the cast would get bogged down at times. That’s why they needed therapy and to be cheered up every once in a while. Thus, they were brought therapy dogs. Minnette, in one of his interviews, stated, “I know there was one scene, I wasn’t around, but they had therapy dogs on set. There was a puppy per hour.”

Therapy dogs! That’s a nice way of cheering anyone up!

Number 7: The original plan was to make a feature film

The 13-episode Netflix format was especially made for the web series 13 Reasons Why, but the original plan was to make a full-fledged feature film starring Selena Gomez as Hannah.

However, Gomez seemed happy being a part of the project as a producer and out of the spotlight. In one of her interviews, Gomez shared, “The older I got—once I left my series, once I started to go for roles that weren’t that age range—it organically began to become a project that I knew I would be behind the scenes with.”

We loved the series, but won’t completely scrap the idea of a movie version. Are the producers and writers listening?

Number 6:  Selena Gomez has lent her voice

Yes, we will make another mention of Selena Gomez. Gomez is connected to the show in other ways other than being the producer. Gomez released a snippet of herself, where she can be heard strumming the 80s hit “Only You” on Twitter last March 29.

If you wish to listen to this, check out the show’s soundtrack. We won’t ever miss a chance to listen to Gomez, agree?

Number 5: The series featured real-life locations

13 Reasons Why seems like a reflection of real life, but did you have the slightest idea that the shoots were not just sets but were also done in real locations.

As per the main stars of the show, Minnette and Langford, they started shooting in Northern California’s Analy High School. However, since they started in summer, the school year had eventually started. This is why they had to stop the shoot for a while, and then build the entire school hallway in a set, which is visible in the series.

That’s another reason to watch the show with careful attention!

Number 4: Hannah used a different mode of suicide as per the book

The makers of 13 Reasons Why deliberately changed a part of the story, and should we say, one of the most essential parts? As per the book, Hannah committed suicide by overdose.

But the makers of the show changed the method to Hannah slitting her wrists. That was ghastly! The makers wanted to show that committing suicide is not something to be lauded; rather, there is nothing worthwhile in committing suicide. So, they wanted to show it as something very painful.

Number 3: Hannah was supposed to survive in the first place!

Want some more juicy facts? Hannah was originally supposed to survive in the book. Yes, even I was shocked!

Since she took the pills, author Jay Asher thought of a plot where her parents were able to take her to the hospital, get her stomach pumped, and survive.

However, the author thought that the message would be stronger and with more appeal if she died. It would become a cautionary tale since death is so final.

We’re speechless right now!

Katherine Langford as Hannah Baker

Number 2: Living her dream

Katherine Langford is an Australian and was born in Perth. She was super excited to grab the chance of living the American dream during filming. To quote her, she said, “This may just be me, but I feel like everyone’s dream is to live as an American high school student. There are so many teen films set in America that you live vicariously through them, anyway. But it was totally different. I got to experience Halloween, and prom, and cheerleaders… and the Fourth of July! It was crazy.”

Sigh! Lucky girl! Would we ever have a chance to live our dreams like she did?

Hey! We also have few more goodies. Care for some more?

The book had a different title

Author Jay Asher originally wanted to name the book Baker’s Dozen: the Autobiography of Hannah Baker. Did you get the logic here? A baker’s dozen is one more than the normal dozen,  13.

Learned to drive before acting

Christian Navarro had to learn to drive for reprising his role as Tony. Christian couldn’t drive before he started shooting for 13 Reasons Why. But he had to learn driving and get his license so that he would be able to drive the red Ford Mustang seen in the series.

Number 1: Dylan Minnette didn’t read the book before shooting

As per the reports, Dylan Minnette hasn’t even read the book until nowIn his opinion, he didn’t want to confuse the character in the book with the one in the show. Rather, he wanted to portray the character in his own way.

13 Reasons Why, by its dynamic storylines, explored and spoke about a large number of social issues affecting the youth of today. These issues include suicide, sexual  assault, bullying, racism, mental health, drug addiction, domestic violence, homophobia, deportation, police brutality, abortion, and school shootings. Yes, it’s dark and intense, but people have applauded the show it largely because it exposed the realities of these issues.

We end with that. Did you feel the same way about the show? Or what were some other opinions you had on 13 Reasons Why? Also, how were the facts? Let us know in the comments section below.
