A heart-warming smile, dapper looks, and dashing personality. What more do we need to go gaga over Thomas Cruise Mapother IV?
Can you guess who exactly we are talking about? Ok, here’s another hint. We loved him in the Mission Impossible franchise. Now, that was cool, right?
Welcome to Watch Tank, and today we are counting down picks to reveal the ten most incredible things done by the famous Hollywood actor and producer, Tom Cruise.
Of course, Tom Cruise needs no introduction. He has received various accolades for his work, including three Golden Globe Awards and three Academy Awards nominations.
Were you aware that with a net worth of $570 million as of 2020, he is right now one of world’s highest-paid actors?
Also, his films have also grossed over $4 billion in North America and over $10.1 billion worldwide. That makes him one of the highest-grossing box office stars of all time.
As much as the actor has charmed us with his antics, he has also gained much prominence for doing incredible things offscreen.
Ready to get entertained? So, here we go.
Number 10: Improvisations on the dance of Risky Business
Actors are known for their improvisations and impromptu acts. As for Cruise, the fact that he is an actor par-excellence is undoubted. Were you aware that many a time he has crafted his own stunts for his movies?
And on that note, do you remember Cruise’s famous dance moves from the movie Risky Business? That particular scene from the movie took almost half a day to film.
Cruise grabbed the chance to show off his dance moves by improvising his now famous dance steps. Cruise just had to follow a simple piece of instruction from the film’s script which stated, “Joel dances in underwear through the house.”
In case you have missed it, watch it today.
Number 9: Creating controversies
Controversies are a part and parcel of every actor’s life, and the world got stirred by some of the statements made by this Rain Man actor.
In 1990, he denounced all his ties from the orthodox Catholic beliefs and embraced The Church of Scientology. To add fuel to the fire, he also claimed that the courses in Scientology teachings had helped him cure his dyslexia, which haunted him since he was seven. To this, he also added that he was functionally illiterate until he found out about Hubbard’s Study Technology, which taught him the learning method on how to read as an adult.
That was pretty awesome!
Number 8: Cruise might as well possess healing powers
Tom Cruise is a great actor and a humble guy who loves being with his fans. While appearing in any event, it is an unwritten rule that Cruise would spend at least two hours interacting with his fans.
Loving fans and interacting with them is a common gesture, but does he have healing powers? Isn’t that a bit impossible? Though there is no proof it it, Tony Ortega, editor of the Scientology watchdog blog The Underground Bunker, revealed that Cruise, after reaching the Operating Thetan VI level in the Church of Scientology, claimed to have gained the powers to heal sprained joints, colds, and sore throat, all with a simple touch. Now, wasn’t that unreal?
To add to that, in a leaked Scientology propaganda video, Cruise stated, “When you drive past an accident, it’s not like anyone else. If you drive past, you know you have to do something about it because you know you’re the only one who can really help.”
Number 7: Rejected the role of Iron Man
Even the thought is so amusing! Just imagine Cruise in the role of Tony Stark, or Iron Man. Impeccably awesome, right?
To trust the sources, before Robert Downey Jr. got cast as Tony Stark in the kick-off production from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Iron Man, the role was first offered to Cruise who declined.
Honestly, we love them both. Robert Downey Jr. was extraordinarily awesome in his portrayal of the role. But for the Cruisers, didn’t we all have that sigh of disappointment after hearing of this?
Maybe in some parallel universe, we can wait and watch for Cruise to play Iron Man. Fingers crossed!
Number 6: Following the Beckham diet
The friendship between Cruise and football star David Beckham is much talked about. It was mainly due to Beckham that Cruise became a supporter of the Spanish soccer club Real Madrid.
This might not be new to many, but did you know that Cruise follows the same diet as Beckham?
How do you think he can be so lean and fit even at the age of fifty? Cruise strictly followed the Beckham diet, a strict diet regimen named after soccer star David Beckham. This diet is known for its 1,200-calorie-a-day plan that consists mostly of vegetables and lean proteins.
Anyone up for the diet?
Number 5: A responsible father
Cruise is a wonderful actor onscreen, and a responsible father offscreen. Care for the story?
In 2002, after inaugurating that year’s Academy Awards, he did not stay for the rest of the show, as that day was his turn to look after his and ex-wife Nicole Kidman’s children.
Now that’s a responsible father. As per reports, he left the Kodak Theatre by the back door after opening the awards show. Then he went back home to be with the kids and watched the rest of the event on television with Conor and Isabella.
How can we not love this man?
Number 4: Was almost dead
Actors have to risk their lives every day, facing situations and circumstances that bring them very close to death.
Cruise faced such a scenario. While shooting for The Last Samurai, Cruise swiftly avoided death when one of the mechanical horses that were used for the fight scenes malfunctioned. This caused his co-star, Hiroyuki Sanada, to move his blade around, at the wrong time. The sword barely stopped before hitting Cruise’s neck. That was a near save!
Later, Sanada described the moment saying, “I just managed to stop my sword an inch from his neck.”
Number 3: Two weddings, one best-man
That’s another instance of Cruise’s bromance. During his wedding with Nicole Kidman in 1990 and then to Katie Holmes in 2006, Cruise’s friendship with the controversial leader of the Church of Scientology, David Miscavige, was placed before the public eye.
Miscavige took the role of best man at both wedding ceremonies. As per reports, since the 80s, Cruise and Miscavige have developed a deep bond over their love for the Church. Besides, they have been often discovered speaking in a secret language and gambling together in Las Vegas.
Number 2: Japan loves Cruise like no other
Cruise has fans spread all across the globe, but no one loves him like the Japanese do.
Hard to believe? This is true! On October 10, 2006, the Japan Memorial Day Association announced that they would begin celebrating 10th October as Tom Cruise Day in Japan. The reason is the innumerable trips that he made to the country, which is more than any other Hollywood star.
We have more reasons to love Cruise. Stay hooked!
Cruise’s first celebrity crush
All of us have crushed on Cruise at some point, but who was Cruise’s first celebrity crush? In an interview, Cruise admitted that his first celebrity crush was actress Ingrid Bergman when she portrayed Alicia Huberman in the 1946 Nazi thriller, Notorious.
Church fixing dates
How much importance can the Church hold in one’s life? The answer is learned from Cruise’s life. The Church of Scientology fixed up the first date between Cruise and Holmes. The Church allegedly went to the extent of holding auditions for years to find “Kidman’s replacement.”
Was that even for real?
Well, why not? Especially for a person who got an award tailor made just for him. Watch out for this!
Number 1: Customized award
In 2005, Cruise accepted the first ever Generation Award, which was customized just for him. MTV gave this award “to an artist who has shown us a variety of impressive roles, a personal and professional flair, and of course, an awesome level of talent” at the MTV Movie Awards.
Truly deserving! What can you say?
A once shy fourteen year old boy whose aim was to join the priesthood, transitioning to one of the top 100 movie stars of all time, the journey was nothing less than a fairy-tale for Tom Cruise. He is a star we desire and the human we all wish we could have become.
With that, we end this list. Were the facts nice? Do share your comments, reviews, and feedback on the comments section below.
