5. A Christmas Movie

Did you know that Iron Man 3 was a Christmas Movie?

Well, it was!

There is a scene in the movie where Tony Stark signs an autograph for two kids. After that, he proceeds to say that one of the kids looked like Ralphie Parker from A Christmas Story. Quite a Christmas reference, isn’t it?

Well, for additional information, the actor who played Ralphie Parker is Peter Billingsley. He was the producer of the first two Iron Man movies and had also made a guest appearance in the first film. Also, the many shots in the movie were full of Christmas Trees as well as Christmas themes. The movie was also the first Iron Man movie by Shane Black, who was a late-stage replacement for Jon Favreau who bowed out of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

So, a Christmas Superhero movie? Well, you can say that, can’t you?

4. The Final Scene of Iron Man

Did you know that Robert Downey Jr. injured his ankle during the Iron Man 3 shoot?

It is common for actors to get injured during shoots and this was no different during the shooting of Iron Man 3. Robert Downey Jr. got injured during the shooting of the film, leading to additional break for the lead actor in other for him to make a fully recovery. However, this didn’t affect completion timeline, demonstrating the dedication of the producers and directors towards the movies fanbase. There were no delays or gaps, they just couldn’t wait for the Iron Man to return.

Shane had planned to use a CGI version of Robert Downey Jr. In this, Robert’s face was to be super-imposed using facial-capture filming onto a body double. Can you imagine the final scenes without the actually Tony Stark? Quite impossible, isn’t it?

With the effects-made to Frankenstein’s monster and the CGI version of Robert, it was quite convincing for the viewers to watch.

“So, if I were to wrap this up tight with a bow or whatever, I guess I’d say my armour, it was never a distraction or a hobby, it was a cocoon. And now, I’m a changed man. You can take away my house, all my tricks and toys.”

3.Raza of Ten Rings not the Real Mandarin

Remember the Ten Rings?

These dialogues might help you remember.

Tony Stark- “Who are these people?”

Ho Yinsen- “They are your loyal customers, sir. They call themselves the Ten Rings.”

Raza from the Ten Rings is the terrorist who ended up having a deformed face as a result of an explosion caused by Tony Stark, as he escapes in the first Iron Man suit. As Richard said, “This strike is only Ten Rings’ latest step in global destabilisation.”

Faran Tahir, who played Raza, stated that there was a chance of Raza returning in the forthcoming Iron Man movie. Although we don’t see Raza, we do see Mandarin in Iron Man 3. We later discover that it was not Tahir but Ben Kingsley who played Raza, though both Raza and Mandarin share a common ring.

This is also the same ring Raza wore in the “Ten Rings”, quite unusual, isn’t it?

Quite Unusual, isn’t it?

2. Realistic depiction of PTSD

For those who don’t know what PTSD is, it stands for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder which is characterized by inability to recover from traumatic and terrifying events experienced.

Now you might be wondering, what has this got to do with Iron Man 3?

Well, the movie clearly depicts Tony Stark’s battles with PTSD, a move that could signify the openness of Hollywood in discussing the subject of mental health as well as showcasing the struggles of the condition among it stars.

The industry is moving away from old stereotypes and dangerous clichés which have been steeped in discrimination. Thus, moving forward towards showing the male characters going through PTSD.

Well, even a psychology textbook showcased the need to prove that men also go through mental health problems, just like Iron Man.

The film shows Tony Stark in a weakened state as his home is blown to bits and his world is turned upside down.

Well, even Tony Stark has his ups and downs.

There are some other factors why people love Iron Man 3

  • Pepper’s Necklace

People show love in different ways, for Tony Stark his way of professing his love was to provide Pepper Potts, a necklace which was made out of things that have come out of one of his orifices. In the movie’s

epilogue, Stark gifts Pepper with the jewellery as a symbol of his love for her. Yet, in the end, it turned out that the necklace was also the key of his survival. As we could see that she made him want to live again just by that jewel itself.

  • Do you know what that necklace is made of?

Well, it is made with the pieces of shrapnel that was removed from his chest. It was supposed to be unremovable, but they somehow managed to remove it.

  • Female Villain

Do you love Iron Man 3 because of its male villain?

Well, Shane Black earlier fancied having Rebecca Hall’s Maya Hansen as the feminine twist of Aldrich Killian, the villain in the movie.

During an interview, Shane stated, “There was an initial draft of Iron Man 3 where we had an indication of a problem. Which is that we had a female character who was the villain in the plan. We had completed the script, and we were given a no-holds-barred memo saying that they cannot stand. So, we had to change our minds because after discussing, we’ve decided that the toy won’t sell as well if it was a female.”

Well, no toys will sell, that’s just bad.

Now let’s move to the number one on the list.

1. Mandarin Returns as the Main Villain

Well, remember Mandarin?

He was supposed to be the main villain in all the Iron Man series, but he does not appear in the first two series. In the third part of Iron Man movie, Shane Black brings Mandarin back as the main villain, but this time round, with a few changes.

Know what are those?

Mandarin is not Chinese in this film. During an interview, Kevin Feige, the president of Marvel Studios, stated that Mandarin was the most famous foe of the Iron Man comics, principally due to him lasting longest in the comics. Forgetting Mandarin in the Iron Man movies would just make the film incomplete. Faran Tahir also said in one of his interviews that, “It hasn’t been finalized yet, so we’ll see. The character didn’t die in the first one, and it is part of a larger story. Iron Man’s biggest nemesis is Mandarin, and my character is the only reference to Mandarin. So, we’re still trying to figure out how it’s going to fit. The things to consider, I think, are that if it is a bigger story, how much of it is exposed [and] when.”

In addition, Madarin has a Captain America tattoo. Well, not exactly the same. During an interview, Shane said that the tattoo on Mandarin was actually a Captain America shield with a chaos symbol in the middle, which was symbolical of the corruption of America. Shane was criticised for his Mandarin

twist, but “All Hail the King” was made as an apology for the twist. It was created by Iron Man 3’s co-writer Drew Pearce.

With new villains and new concepts, Iron Man 3 did steal the hearts of many. What did you think, learn and love about the final Iron Man movie?
