9. Oh, Luke is a Genius!

The youngest child of the Dunphy family, Luke, is played by Nolan Gould. He is considered to be the brightest crayon in the box like his elder sister Alex in the show. However, Nolan Gould is a genius in real life. He revealed he has an IQ of 150 and it’s because of this that he joined the largest IQ society, the Mensa International. He revealed all this on the Ellen DeGeneres Show. He graduated from school at the age of 13, in 2012. He has been taking online classes for his college since then while simultaneously excelling in Modern Family. He is also proficient in playing instruments and plays the Banjo. He played the Sitar on an interview with Ellen.

8. Hidden Pregnancy on set

What most of us missed while watching Modern Family was Julie Bowen’s pregnancy. Oh yes, she was eight and a half months pregnant when she was cast. Julia, who plays the role of Claire Dunphy, wanted to do the show after falling in love with the character after reading the script. Julia was pregnant with twins and pleaded with the producers to let her be a part of the show. On agreeing, most of her scenes were caught in close-ups. She had to be hidden behind laundry baskets to cover her baby bump. The ABC picked up the show in May, and it was continuously filmed that summer.

Did you notice her hiding behind the laundry basket too? Let us know in the comments below.

7. Alternate Role Offers

Apart from the present cast, other actors were offered roles for Modern Family, Matt LeBlanc and Rob Huebel were given consideration for the role as Phil Dunphy. Lisa Kudrow and Kristen Johnston were supposed to play Claire. Initially, Tyler Ferguson was considered for Cam. Craig T. Nelson, the actor from ABC, who’s famous for his role on Coach and Parenthood respectively. Nelson wanted to play the role of Jay Pritchett and had high monetary expectation than what was being offered by the network for his role.

6. Forgetful Parent

One of the hilarious aspects of the series was that in the initial days of Modern Family, Jay used to forget that his son, Mitchell was gay. The fact that Mitchell had to keep reminding his father about the same became quite a joke on the sitcom. The actor, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, who played the role of Mitchell, admitted that he had the same problem in real life as well. He mentioned how his father would forget he was gay and would often have to remind him about it. Even though many years had passed, Ferguson’s father couldn’t come to terms with it until he told him three times that he was gay. Ferguson is finally married to actor/producer Justin Mikita.

5. On-screen Kiss After Facebook Petition

On seeing the gay couple on screen, Mitchell Pritchett and Cameron Tucker, the audience was not only happy for the on-screen appearance but had set a significant expectation from them. There was a Facebook campaign which mentioned that the couple had never kissed on the show. The attack was called “Let Cam & Mitchell Kiss on Modern Family!”. Finally, on September 10th, Mitchell and Cameron shared their first on-screen kiss, which was also the first time that a gay pair had kissed on television.

4. Modern Family was Supposed to be a Documentary

Have you wondered why the Pritchetts and Dunphys are always talking to the camera? The series was initially planned to be a documentary shot by Geert Floorjte, a Dutch filmmaker. Geert Floorjte knew the Pritchetts because of a teenage exchange programme, so he came back to the US to film them. However, the creators of Modern Family, Steve Levitan and Christopher Lloyd removed Geert from the series as they thought he was unnecessary. That is when they decide to make it a comedy series instead.

3. Adoption? Not So Easy

Another critical aspect of the series is when the gay couple decided to adopt a Vietnamese child.

The series was filmed and aired in 2009, and it wasn’t possible for them to adopt a child. According to the law of Vietnam, it was illegal for both single parents, and a same-sex couple to adopt a child. They could still adopt the child illegally yet could be barred from flying to the US. It was only recently that the country became tolerant of the LGBTQ community. However, for the show the plot was worth watching, and it was terrific.

2. Popular Episodes and Seasons

The third season was the most watched season aired during 2011-2012. The series had an average of 12.93 million viewers and ranked as the 15th most watched show that season. The least-watched season was the first season. The show is currently rated 20th most popular TV show with an average of 12 million viewers.

Before we reveal our number 1 pick, here are some honourable mentions.

  • Sofia Vergara was the highest-paid television series actress making an estimate of $19 million.
  • Eric Stonestreet, playing the role of Cameron Tucker, is straight in real life. It is difficult to distinguish the actor from real life as he played a brilliant role as a flamboyant gay man.
  • Britney Spears was offered a role in Modern Family.
  • Both Lady Michelle Obama and Ann Romney mentioned in an interview with The Insider that Modern Family had been their favourite show.
  • Jay Pritchett reads the same newspaper for 30 years. On a closer look, you will notice that the prop newspaper Jay uses on Modern Family is the same in all the season.
